Dr. Christian Marcoe, DMA
Director of Music

Conductor, teacher, tenor, organist, and pianist Christian E. Marcoe, native of Washington State, attained a Doctor of Musical Arts degree in sacred music at the University of Southern California Thornton School of Music. Christian's education also includes the degrees of Master of Music from the Thornton School, and Bachelor of Music in vocal and piano performance from Pacific Lutheran University. Dr. Marcoe completed four years of liturgical study while in residence in the Benedictine order at St. Martin's Abbey and University, and completed advanced studies in voice with teachers in Zurich, Lucerne, Linz, Vienna, Wiesbaden, Heidelberg, and Cambridge.

Upon his return to the United States in 1994, Christian served as Director of Music and Principal Organist at St. Bernard Catholic Church and School for seven years. He presently serves in that capacity at Holy Family Catholic Church (HFCC), Glendale. While at St. Bernard, he established an extensive graded choral music program that was admired throughout the Archdiocese of Los Angeles. Dr. Marcoe is now in his eleventh season with Los Angeles Master Chorale, and has sung frequently with the Los Angeles Philharmonic and Hollywood Bowl Orchestras, and is in frequent demand as both vocal soloist and chorister in events throughout the Los Angeles musical community.

Dr. Marcoe is the founder and Music Director of the St. Cecilia Chorale (SCC) and Schola Cantorum; dedicated to the preservation of traditional Catholic music, and the promotion of new sacred choral works. The chorale is comprised of professional and volunteer choral artists from throughout the Archdiocese. Under Dr. Marcoe’s leadership, the chorale regularly provides music for important liturgical events and concerts, and has also toured extensively throughout Europe presenting liturgies and concerts in major venues including St. Giles—the Scottish National Cathedral, Warwick Castle, St. Peter’s Basilica—Rome, and the Basilica of St. Mark in Venice.

During his ten years in Europe, Christian was engaged by the Heidelberg City Opera, appearing in over 120 performances each season. His repertoire includes over forty operas and numerous concert works.

Christian has performed for the royal families of the United Kingdom and Sweden, United States presidents, and several popes. Over the course of his career, he has appeared in many of the finest cathedrals and concert halls in North America, Europe, and Asia.
